Ecuador (known as the Republic of Ecuador) literally translates into Republic of the Equator. It is located in South America bordered by Peru, Colombia and the Pacific Ocean. There are coastal beaches, snowy mountain tops and a tropical rainforest. The main language is Spanish but there are other languages used in native communities. The capital of Ecuador is Quito. There is a great variety in climate which is largely determined by altitude. Because of its location at the equator, Ecuador has its sunrise and sunset at 6 o’clock each day.
Ecuador is one of the 17 megadiverse countries. It also has the most biodiversity per square kilometer in the world. There are over 15 million inhabitants and the population is ethnically diverse.
Roughly a 5 hour drive from Quito is this quaint town. Located in a secluded enclave in the highlands of the Bolivar province, Salinas de Bolivar is famous for its delicious handmade chocolate, processed meats, cheese and sweaters. Salinas also boasts fair trade factories which are open all year round.
Some activities include hiking, fishing, mountain tours and horseback riding.
